Having Enough Combustible Air is No Joke
Combustible Air is necessary to run your fuel powered appliances such as boilers, hot water heaters and gas dryers. Fuel needs two things to burn--an ignition source and oxygen (combustible air). In a small utility room with gas appliances, all of the combustible air is quickly used up. If the appliance doesn't get enough combustible air, the fuel doesn't burn all the way and carbon monoxide is drafted back into the home. Bad news for people napping on the couch or watching TV in the finished basement next to the utility room.
See this air vent stuffed with a towel? The owner stuffed the vent with a towel because "cold air was coming in during the winter". Winter is when the boiler is used the most and needs the most combustible air. He was blocking the air with the towel. He's lucky his family didn't die of CO poisoning. This is why we always recommend CO alarms on every floor if you have fuel burning equipment in the home.
